Abstract
Although not by any means new, the decolonisation of the curriculum has more recently
become a prominent debate at all levels of education. Thanks to a global call for action on
this issue, increasing numbers of UK universities and HE institutions are implementing or
have already implemented specific programmes and plans to decolonise their curricula. The
University of Strathclyde has joined other Scottish universities and colleges in endorsing a
landmark commitment to support a declaration against racism. Furthermore, as a Leading
Technological University, we believe that decolonising the curriculum fits well with our
Strategic Plan 2025.
There are currently dedicated working groups and directed actions plans, as well as
platforming the research taking shape across its faculties in areas connected to the study of
race and decolonisation. The following will allow you an overview:
Every month of October, Strathclyde joins every other UK institutions in the celebration of
Black History Month (BHM), where our students are also directly involved in organising
events through the Students’ Union (Strath Union BHM 20).
A Race Equality Working Group has also been established, which, alongside other groups,
works to ensure an inclusive environment for Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students
and staff. Several colleagues within the School of Humanities have also recently established
the Anti-racism sub-committee, which is part of the HASS Gender Equality, Diversity and
Inclusion (GEDI) committee.
Within HASS, colleagues in different disciplines undertake research specific to the topic of
decolonisation and there are a number of courses and programmes across the different
subject areas that cover those issues. (1)
