Abstract
Nineteen-ninety-one has seen the birth of a giant experiment, one of the largest experiments ever conducted in terms of size, a world first opening up exciting possibilities. It comprises the mounting of a major citation database over an academic network to a potential user base consisting not only of thousands of academics with their own personal computers but also tens of thousands of students, financed on an institutional up-front basis and free at the point of use.
