N2 - This empirical study examines the microfoundations of dynamic capabilities in cross-border acquisitions. Using a qualitative approach, we attempt to unearth these microfoundations and understand how they contribute to the long-term viability and profitability of OTP, a large Hungarian financial service provider. We conducted semi-structured phenomenological interviews with international level senior executives within both acquiring and acquired entities, trying to understand their lived experiences of acquisitions. Our findings reveal how OTP’s sensing, seizing and transforming capabilities drive profitable and reputable regional acquisitions. Moreover, we identify nonlinear bidirectional relationships between sensing, seizing, and transforming activities, suggesting a more complex, systemic interplay than previously understood. This research contributes to dynamic capabilities scholarship by providing empirical grounding for its microfoundations and illuminating the nuanced processes driving successful cross-border integration.
