Abstract

Medium voltage DC (MVDC) systems have the potential to act as a key enabler for new offshore wind projects and have attracted increased attention, due to the significant advantages of less conversion stage and less power losses in MVDC collector. This paper performs cost benefit analysis (CBA) for OWFs connected with MVDC systems. Detailed configurations of a hypothetical OWFs are presented and the CBA results for the MVDC array topologies is provided and compared to that of conventional high-voltage AC (HVAC) solutions. It is demonstrated that MVDC systems are a promising technology for offshore wind energy transmission in the near future.
