Abstract
Craigmillar is one of Edinburgh’s largest housing estates situated on the south-eastern periphery of the city, approximately 5km from
the city centre. The community has long suffered from the effects of social deprivation, with low economic activity, crime, poor health
and low educational achievement. These negative perceptions have contributed to the community becoming stigmatised as a place
to live and by the ‘culture of dependency’ associated with peripheral housing estates.
