Abstract
The House of Lords recently handed down its judgment in the case of R (On the application of Quintavalle) v. Secretary of State for Health [2003] UKHL 13. This note traces the progress of the case through the courts and analyses the legal reasoning contained in the House of Lords decision, focusing on the court’s purposive approach to interpreting the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990.
