Abstract
This paper presentation investigates the integration of Applied Linguistics (AL) within undergraduate (BA) and postgraduate (MSc) TESOL courses at a Scottish university, focusing on critical discourse analysis of AL trends, strengths, gaps, and potential areas for development as well as thematic analysis of students’ attitudes to AL’s presence in TESOL curricula. The presentation will explore how AL informs language teacher education curricula by examining its presence, sustenance, and potential fading out in the Scottish and international context. Drawing from a diverse range of geographical snapshots, we illustrate innovative practices and approaches and propose how AL can play a more substantial role in TESOL programmes. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills, our analysis highlights the importance of equipping future language teachers with a deeper understanding of language learning and intercultural communication. We propose strategies for enhancing the TESOL curriculum to address the evolving needs of learners in a linguistically diverse world, emphasising the role of AL in bridging theory and practice for effective language teaching. This presentation contributes to the ongoing discourse on the multifaceted roles of AL in preparing language teachers and offers insights for curriculum enhancement and future research directions (Language Curriculum SIG track).
