Abstract

CALDON CANAL FOOTBRIDGE,HANLEY CANAL QUARTER, STOKE-ON-TRENT NORD won an invited competition for the design of an inspirational strategic framework for a residential mixed-use site on the Caldon Canal next to Hanley City Centre. Urban Splash and its partners are looking to deliver an outstanding waterside development, with a strong sense of place which reinforces the regeneration of the area. The bridge is conceived as a social space for gathering, resting and enjoying views across the proposed canal basin. Large steps on each side of the canal basin allow for easy access to the new leisure activities while creating an informal south facing amphitheatre experience. The bridge surface and underside will display bespoke geometric patterns by NORD, derived from local industrial ceramicist Thomas Minton in the late 19th century thereby establishing strong links with the history of the local community. Bridge wins Commendation at Scottish Design Award. May 2010 IstructE 2010 Structural awards shortlist for pedestrian bridges.
