Abstract
Interview
When John Gardner, in The Art of Fiction, describes the experience of reading a novel as "the vivid and continuous fictional dream," I presume he means for this experience to apply to the writer as well. In my first book, One Star Awake, the amnesiac narrator describes watching a movie—E.T. as it happens—as "a sedative and stimulant all in one."
