Abstract

Two industrial revolutions are coexisting in the era we live in. On the one hand, Industry 4.0 is driven by technology, productivity, and profitability; on the other hand, Industry 5.0 takes a more human-centric approach, with its major components being sustainability, green technology, and health and well-being. The ability to connect vast amounts of real-time sensing and Internet of Things data through digital twinning of physical systems is rapidly evolving. The sensor fusion, simulations, machine learning, AI, and other advanced techniques are applied to create a dynamic virtual representation of the entire system making a cyber physical system. From micromachines to smart cities, there are applications at every scale. There are many different and application-specific CPS architectures, and efforts to standardize and modularize CPS architecture are still in their infancy. This special issue gives priority to system-level designs in the context of cyber-physical system-based applications.

In consequence, this Special Issue seeks innovative works on a wide range of research topics spanning system level architectures for CPS and related technologies, but not restricted to the following topics:

Human centric CPS for seamless integration of humans with physical and cyber layers.
CPS architectures for standardization, modularity and digital twin validation considerations.
CPS in medical, health & well-being applications.
All aspects of cyber physical production systems including sensing, robotics, machine learning, big data analytics and system vulnerability.
CPS for smart infrastructure, roads and buildings with underpinning issues related to human interaction.
CPS architectures for robotic applications in unstructured and unconstrained environments.

Topics for this call for papers include but are not restricted to:

System level architectures in cyber physical system applications
Human centric CPS architecture
Architectures for CPS validation
Standardization in CPS architectures
Modularity consideration for CPS architectures
CPS architectures for Industry 5.0
CPS architectures for digital twins
Machine learning techniques for CPS architectures
CPS architectures for unstructured robotic applications
