Advancing understanding of entrepreneurial embeddedness: forms of capital, social contexts and time

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

In this chapter, we set out a research agenda for extending and deepening our understanding of embeddedness in various contexts. Specifically, we advocate Bourdieu’s (1977, 1984, 1986) theory of practice as a conceptual frame for furthering our understanding of entrepreneurial embeddedness. We argue that it is time to question the primacy of economic capital and to, instead, consider in more detail the complex interplays of cultural, social, and symbolic capital. We also propose that future research explore a wider range of non-mainstream contexts, especially those lacking significant endowments of financial resources. Furthermore, we suggest that our epistemology should recognise the inter-subjectivity of entrepreneurial embeddedness and that we enact this through our methods.
