Abstract
This article examines three ways in which Lasdun
tried in the later 1950s to wage his own 'terrible
battle with architecture', and to escape 'the sameness
of English architecture'. Under the title 'New Styles' it
looks at his attempts to develop a personal
architectural style. 'New Types' investigates Lasdun's
pursuit of fresh architectural approaches to
designing large building complexes. 'A New
Movement', the final section of the article, suggests
that part of the process of self-reinvention which
Lasdun pursued throughout the 1950s included
positioning himself close to the core group who were
developing the most internationally discussed
British movement of the decade, 'New Brutalism'.
