A high-power pulsed power supply for high-power microwave sources

Abstract

A range of pulsed microwave sources, under investigation at the University of Strathclyde, require the generation of multi-kilo-ampere, relativistic, electron beams1,2. These may be mono-energetic or varying in energy throughout the duration of the pulse (dependant on the source in question), however all require a driving supply capable of dealing with potentially rapid changes in the accelerating diode impedance.

This paper presents the current configuration of a high-energy, high-power, pulsed power supply (PPS), developed and tested in-house at the University of Strathclyde2-4. In its present state the PPS can deliver pulses of up to 1MV at 100kA, for 200 – 250ns, with a relatively flat-top pulse profile and highly reproducible shot – shot performance. The ability to drive such high currents, for a given voltage requirement, makes the supply ideal for use in the development of multiple prototype microwave sources, as the applied voltage can be maintained despite potentially rapid changes in the diode current, due to an evolving diode perveance through the duration of the pulse by use of a relatively low matching resistance in parallel with the diode.
