This feasibility study investigated the application of virtual reality (VR) and underwater photogrammetry for remote maintenance and training within the aquaculture sector. The project involved creating a "digital twin"—a photorealistic 3D model of a fish farm—which enabled personnel to conduct virtual inspections and pre-dive familiarisation. The initiative aimed to evaluate the technology's potential to reduce operational costs, minimise diver risks, and enhance training effectiveness.

Key findings

The project successfully developed a proof-of-concept for VR dive training, which was validated by industry partners. This demonstrated the viability of using VR and 3D scanning for remote training and maintenance in aquaculture. The initiative also sparked interest in expanding the technology's application to other areas, such as processing plant training and public relations.
