Conference Paper for SGSAH-funded Art and Design Catalyst Event: Transdisciplinary Research: The Common Room for the (Un)Common Book

Ameek Gilhotra's paper on Mayer, Bernadette, Memory (South Korea: Siglio Press, 2020)

Summary: Memory is an extensive text populated with text and photographs. It presents a flâneuse charting New York City. The business and intensity of the city see their architectural mirroring in the daring and experimental textual structure; its ‘bookness’ is heavy, unapologetic, and forgiving. The metropolis compliments simultaneous reactions to Memory: excitement for consistent newness, alongside fatigue towards instability and incessant change. This second-generation New York School text informs my creative and critical research into hybrid forms and considers physicality of space between letters/ words/ sentences (units of meaning).
