Layman's description

In directing the operations of the Sust. Programme in particular, my work focused on linking those looking for sustainable, low energy solutions with those best placed to provide the support required.
Sust. focused on the cumulative effect of small changes to work practices while developing projects that linked those in need of support with those best placed to provide that advice. In addition Sust. existed to raise awareness of and to support the implementation of Scottish Government policy relating to Architecture and Place-making policy.

Key findings

Key achievements:
Delivery a numerous projects that advocated and supported a computational approach to delivery of a better built environment:
The delivery of the RIAS Sustainable Design Accreditation Scheme in 2004 - the first scheme of its type worldwide and on which I remain an assessor for new applicants.
Design and delivery of Sustainable Designs on You – a CPD training course aimed at Housing Association and Private House Builders for Staff, Clients and Architects run across Scotland and resulting in two publications – see www.sust.org.
Responsible for the delivery of a novel Web-based Funding Directory to assist those seeking support for computational and low energy design support and related projects to identify the most appropriate experts and funding stream available to suit their needs - www.thefundingdirectory.org
Delivery of five associated publications and two interactive children’s games: www.mysusthouse.org . The game was developed in conjunction with Screen Media and was awarded a Scottish BAFTA award for game design in 2006.
Established Retrofit Scotland with BRE, Historic Scotland and Napier University in 2013, a cross-sector collaboration (working with experts from a wide range of organisations) to promote best practice in refurbishment, based on existing, documented and monitored outputs of past modelling, monitoring and knowledge transfer works over the last 20 years. Recently resurrected through the UKRI funded Centre for Net Zero Hight Density Buildings – CeNZ-HDB.
Commonwealth Games Legacy - GREEN2014: delivery of a programme showcasing the environmental sustainability legacy of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow - including refurbishment of venues, innovative construction and energy solutions in new venues, land remediation, ecology and modelling support on low and zero carbon projects
Member of the Sullivan Panel 2013 – A Low Carbon Building Standards Strategy for Scotland.
Instigation of the development of a unique Web-based and physical library of materials and services relating to ecological design in Scotland, based on locating products and services as close to the users post code as possible (i.e. a bio-regional approach) - undertaken with the Scottish Ecological Design Association (SEDA): www.thegreendirectory.org.
I was sustainability adviser and a Board Member for Scotland’s first Housing Expo in Inverness in 2010. Work included modelling and POE of houses post occupation during their first two years of occupancy and published a book on the delivery of such a project.
