Description
Collaborative work with Professor Colin Lindsay, and FMLM (Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management). More research is required in the field of medical leadership. Through our work we are aiming to gain better understanding of the impact of Distributed Leadership in healthcare.
Healthcare organisations face extraordinary pressures at present; pressures that have impacted profoundly on staff experience. However, healthcare and medical leaders and teams are also confronted with the need to arrive at responsive solutions to continuously improve care and foster collaboration and innovation. An emerging evidence base from various health and care systems suggests that fostering distributed leadership has the potential to contribute to improved staff experience, and more innovative, effective and integrated care.
Distributed leadership in health and care has been defined as – “an approach to leadership that endorses work practices that combine knowledge, abilities and skills of many individuals… thus creating opportunities for leadership to emerge from individuals at all grades and levels within a team or organisation” (Curtis et al., 2021). – Distributed leadership has been shown to have the potential to deliver benefits for staff and patients. There is even some evidence that effective distributed leadership has contributed to the resilience of health and care systems in the face of the Covid-19 crisis (Currie et al., 2022).
This project will work with FMLM’s network of health and care leaders, managers and teams to gain a better understanding of how and where distributed leadership can make a difference, its potential as a focus for leadership development, and ‘what is needed’ to promote effective distributed leadership. As a first step, we are asking health and care leaders to take 7-8 minutes to complete an online survey. We also hope to conduct interviews with volunteers later this year to explore insights for leadership development in more detail.
So, if you are a member of FMLM's networks or a healthcare leader at any level, we would be hugely grateful if you were able to find a few minutes to participate. Or healthcare professionals can find and complete the survey HERE.
