Distribution network observability is becoming increasingly critical for the effective and safe operation of the network. Novel sensors and sensing algorithms play an enabling role in identifying operational issues and disturbances on the network. This project aims to evaluate the performance of a pre-production implementation of overhead line conductor collision, movement and sag detection solution that is capable of distinguishing between these different events based on unique movement signatures. This detection information can then be used by the network operator to respond appropriately. The testing at the PNDC involves installing six of these sensors on a dedicated overhead line span then manipulate the line in order to emulate the aforementioned disturbance conditions. The test setup includes a full integration of sensors and aggregator unit for wirelessly monitoring and evaluating the sensor measurements.
