Description
Responding to the urgent crisis of a shortage in placement offers that affected all Allied Health Professions courses in the UK, I created and piloted two innovative in-house placements. StrathLOUD! was dedicated to individuals with Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis, whilst the ICAP focused on language rehabilitation for stroke survivors. The clinics provided an exceptional learning environment for sixteen third- and fourth-year students under the Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) model.
In addition to designing and managing all aspects of the placement, including establishing external partnerships for client recruitment with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS Ayrshire and Arran, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, NHS Forth Valley, Chest Heart and Stroke and MS Revive, I also served as PE for the students.
The successful implementation of the clinics not only addressed the critical need for new placement opportunities but also significantly contributed to the students' professional growth. This project exemplifies my commitment to excellence in all dimensions of teaching, both within and beyond the classroom (strategic aims 3.1 and 3.2; KPI 10: strategic relationships).
Upon completion, I shared the resources I developed for StrathLOUD! and ICAP, including learning materials, assessments, goal-setting frameworks, and intervention plans, with SLP teams at two NHS trusts. These teams will implement the clinics next year with the involvement of students, demonstrating the sustainability and applicability of my work.
