Ice rinks consume large amounts of energy for lighting, heating, forming ice surfaces, ventilation and operating refrigeration equipment. In addition, they require careful balancing of heating (for user comfort) and cooling (for ideal ice conditions). Inverness Ice Rink have identified a need for more efficient solutions which will be adaptable for the various cooling demands by their users. The ice surface requires low temperature, while the area of the spectators and the athletes need a relatively comfortable temperature. Lighting energy consumption is the third largest energy in the ice arenas. Ice rink refrigeration is a complex system meant to precisely keep temperatures appropriate to the needs of the facility.
The aim of this project is to identify suitable options to find the best and most affordable one for the Ice Centre which will maximise operational savings and provide the flexibility to adapt to user requirements and one which will minimise the effects of a refrigeration breakdown.
Project goals include:
• Developing an innovative energy efficiency solution of the ice rink to minimise the energy consumption since this sector is the largest contributor to energy consumption.
• Developing a more efficient solutions, adaptable for various heating and cooling demands, with a possibility of integrating renewable energy technology and hydrogen battery storage.
