Dynamic Characterisation and Durability of Torsion-Spring-Driven CubeSat Deployment Systems

Project: Internally funded project

Project Details

Description

This research theme investigates the dynamic behaviour and durability of torsion-spring-driven hinged structures for CubeSat solar-array deployment through two UG and MSc projects. A coupled computational–experimental approach is used to characterise deployment kinematics, hinge and spring behaviour, shock loads, and the effects of repeated low-cycle deployment on system performance. Lumped-parameter and explicit dynamic models are correlated with prototype testing, torsion-spring characterisation and cyclic deployment measurements to identify key sensitivities, quantify stiffness or torque degradation, and develop recommendations for reducing vibration, shock and reliability risks to sensitive spacecraft payloads.
