Project Details
Description
This project aimed at understanding the effects of additive layer manufacturing using layers of high wear-resistant alloys to combat tool failure. I this project the manufacturing process challenges and wear response of two technologies for H13 substrate were studied; namely, traditional nitriding and Laser Cladding using Ni-based WC. In this project designing a modular die set for quick die insert changeover was successfully implemented.
I had contribution in different aspects of this project which improved my knowledge in the following areas:
• Extrusion dies design
• Additive layer manufacturing
• Advanced materials
• Material characterisation
• Wear and wear assessment
Above research lead to a publication submitted to 14th International Conference on Manufacturing Research (ICMR) 2016, titled: “Wear Behaviour of Laser Cladded Ni-based WC Composite Coating for Inconel Hot Extrusion: Practical Challenges and Effectiveness”, by Lynne MCINTOSH, Javad FALSAFI, Stephen FITZPATRICK and Paul L. BLACKWELL
