Project Details

Description

The Aquatic Wildmeat project aims to gather as much information as possible about the utilisation of aquatic mammals (e.g., dolphins) for food and other purposes, including bait, from around the world. Several publications resulted from this project, as well as the creation of a database that is displayed in an online application/interface (https://aquaticbushmeat.shinyapps.io/wildmeat/).

Key findings

Small cetaceans have been used in most countries in Latin America, West Africa and South and Southeast Asia. The uses include food, bait, religious rituals and medicine. In many cases started as an opportunistic utilisation, and in some areas it led to directed catches. More than 40 species are affected by this activity.
