An investigation into the factors in teacher burnout

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The focus of this research collaboration is to better understand factors that cause teachers stress, and which motivate them to remain in or leave the profession.
Funding awarded: £2002

Layman's description

We aimed to find out why some teachers feel burnout and leave the classroom.

Key findings

Burnout is highly prevalent in teaching, more so than other professions. It is associated with a particular style of coping – high stress, low motivation. This can be understood via theories of motivation, and persists from training onwards, suggesting interventions through teacher education and recruitment.
