Project Details

Description

The AFRC is investing in a medium scale quench tank to allow future research programmes in the area of quenching and quenchants.
Polymer quenchants have reduced risk of fire and environmental contamination compared to oil quenchants.
Using polymer quenching the cooling rate can be altered by varying the components in the mixture. Polymer quenches are capable of producing repeatable results with less corrosion than water and less of a fire hazard than oil.
Polymeric quenchants can be formulated to reduce distortion and improve mechanical properties of components. This will give capability to harden forged parts directly from forging temperatures.
This project focuses on the installation and commissioning of the recently procured Quench Tank for experimental purposes at AFRC.
