AFRC_CATP_05978_ID19-LWIR & Low Oxygen Emissivity Measurements

Project: Internally funded project

Project Details

Description

In order to make best use of infrared temperature measurement technologies, the emissivity of as-manufactured surfaces is required. CATP 785 and 1173 resulted in the development of a database of emissivity values measured using instruments donated by LAND Instruments.
These values have been available to end users of thermal cameras and pyrometers within the AFRC and their use in improving temperature measurements has highlighted the lack of data covering long wavelength infrared emissivities (LWIR ε) at the temperatures associated with forging and forming processes. This project sets out to add this data to the database.
The Emissivity Calibration furnace is also equipped to allow measurements of emissivity in oxygen reduced atmospheres using continuous flows of inert gases. Adding measurements made using low oxygen atmospheres to the database will allow the effect of surface oxides on apparent surface temperatures to be assessed and also provide a simulation of some freshly forged oxide free surfaces.
