AFRC-CRAD-05372 - I-BREAK WP2.3 Transverse Enablers & Evaluation: Manufacturing Technology Study

Project: Research - no external funding

Project Details

Description

Landing gear components typically utilise large complex forgings for which there is not a competitive UK supply chain, the technologies explored in WP2.3 have the potential to unlock recurring and non-recurring cost reductions whilst improving landing gear development time, industrial environmental impact and support a competitive UK supply chain.

The Advanced Forming Research Centre’s (AFRC) technology agnostic Design Engineers intend to run an analytical trade-off study to identify and assess multiple manufacturing process technologies with the potential to deliver the step change necessary to meet next aircraft programme requirements w.r.t. development and production of landing gear components at lower cost and with reduced lead times when compared to incumbent methods.

The manufacturing process technologies explored by the AFRC are focused around incremental forming technologies but also include some emerging technologies not being explored by other partners. The AFRC’s Manufacturing Engineers, highly specialised with respect to the candidate manufacturing process technologies, and AFRC Material Scientists, familiar with the metallurgy associated with these technologies, shall provide support throughout this assessment.
