Personal Statement

Stephen is the Director of the Digital Factory at the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland, University of Strathclyde and is also strategic lead on Remanufacturing. He leads a multidisciplinary dynamic team of 65 engineers and scientists, and over £20m of capital equipment, across disciplines, including Digital Manufacturing, Design Engineering, Additive Manufacturing, Subtractive Manufacturing, Robotics and Metrology Systems.

 

Stephen is also Director of the Remake Value Retention Centre (2024-2028), a new £10m centre commissioned by UKRI as part of the Accelerating the Green Economy Centres funding call. The aim of the Remake Value Retention Centre (RVRC) is to adopt a cross-sector, system level approach to maximise the life of high integrity sector products.

 

A key driver of Stephen’s research is developing solutions that enable a circular economy, particularly in high value, high integrity sectors, such as aerospace, marine, renewables. This involves maximising the life of existing products and designing and manufacturing new products to optimise circular opportunities, with digital technologies playing a crucial role in this.

  • Member of EPSRC Strategic Advisory Team for Manufacturing and Circular Economy
  • Fellow of the IMechE
  • Member of ASTM F42 Standards Committee for additive manufacturing.
