Personal profile
Personal Statement
I am Senior Lecturer in Translation Studies, Programme Director for the MSc Applied Translation & Interpreting and MSc Applied Translation (at MEU) programmes, and Director of Knowledge Exchange for the Department of Humanities. I also contribute to French undergraduate teaching.
I previously held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Edinburgh where I worked on a project entitled “Individual and Cultural Memory in Translation: Mediating French post-WWII accounts of deportation and occupation”, and I continue to be interested in questions around the transmission of memory via translation, and in working at the intersections between Translation Studies, Holocaust Studies, Memory Studies and Museum Studies. A more recent Carnegie Trust Research Incentive Grant has allowed me to explore the role of translation and interpreting during the medical relief effort launched by the British liberators of Belsen in 1945, and I was also principle investigator in the 'Translating Scotland's Heritage' research network, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, that aimed to encourage and advance thinking around the translation of Scotland’s heritage sites across languages, cultures and peoples. I am also interested in the phenomenon of literary retranslation; my first monograph Retranslation: Translation, Literature and Reinterpretation (Bloomsbury, 2014) examined the linguistic behaviour of and contextual influences on multiple English versions of works by Gustave Flaubert and George Sand. I am co-editor (with Anneleen Spiessens) of The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Memory (Routledge, 2022) and co-editor (with Marion Winters and Ursula Böser) of Translation, Interpreting and Technological Changes: Innovations in Research, Practice and Training (Bloomsbury, 2024).
In addition, I am Associate Editor of the journal Translation Studies, a member of the Young Academy of Scotland, and a member of the IATIS Regional Workshops Committee.
I welcome PhD applications with a particular focus on translation and memory, heritage, trauma, musuems and/or translator and interpreter history, as well as AVT and literary approaches more broadly.
