Personal profile

Personal Statement

I joined Strathclyde in 2016 as Lecturer in Translation & Interpreting, having previously held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Edinburgh where I worked on a project entitled “Individual and Cultural Memory in Translation: Mediating French post-WWII accounts of deportation and occupation”. Both my PhD on ‘Confronting the Retranslation Hypothesis: Flaubert and Sand in the British Literary System’ (2011) and my MSc in Translation Studies with French (2004) were funded by AHRC and awarded from Edinburgh, and I completed my undergraduate studies in French and German at University of St Andrews (2003).

I am currently continuing my research on the transmission of memory via translation, in which I seek to better understand (i) how and to what effect French survivor accounts of life in the Nazi camps have been mediated in translation, and (ii) how translation functions in French WWII memorial museums to convey regional and national experiences of ‘les années noires’ to English speaking visitors. My work brings together theoretical and methodological perspectives from Translation Studies, Holocaust Studies, Memory Studies and Museum Studies, and is particularly focused on the ethical role of the translator and on questions of best-practice.

I am also interested in the phenomenon of literary retranslation. My first monograph Retranslation: Translation, Literature and Reinterpretation (Bloomsbury, 2014) examined the linguistic behaviour of and contextual influences on multiple English versions of works by Gustave Flaubert and George Sand. It draws on Systemic Functional Grammar, narratology, narrative theory, genetic criticism and sociological and paratextual approaches to translation in order to propose new ways of exploring and thinking about when, why and how retranslations appear.
