Personal profile

Personal Statement

I am a full-time PhD researcher in English at the University of Strathclyde, funded by the University of Strathclydes' Humanities and Social Sciences school (HaSS doctoral scholarship). My research focuses on the representations of hijras in the mainstream Indian cinema, literary fiction and life writing. Hijras are members of a non-binary community in the Indian subcontinent, mostly regarded as the third-gender. My  research also draws on fieldwork with members of the hijra community in Delhi and aims to bring new ways of thinking about gender and sexuality from South Asia. I am motivated towards working for gender and all kinds of social inequalities, with a particlaur interest in postcolonialism.

I am the vice chair of MeCCSA Postgraduate Network; co-organiser of University of Strathclyde's Feminist Seminar Series and a member of New Voices in Postcolonial Studies. I am also the PGR English student represeantative (2020-2021), student mentor and a graduate teaching assistant.

I have also volunteered at a Delhi-based NGO, Aarohan on the sepcial project on Hijras, and at the Glasgow Feminist Film Festival, Femspectives
