Personal profile

Personal Statement

I am a professor of teacher education. My research revolves around teacher education and international education and development. My research is underpinned by a pursuit of equity, inclusion and social justice. In relation to teacher education and teaching, my research focuses on teaching practicum, school-teacher education institution partnerships, student-teacher and newly qualified teacher mentoring, teacher preparation in the context of rising societal poverty, among others. Internationally, my research on inclusion, education and development has focused on the most vulnerable learners and teachers in resources constrained contexts in low-income and lower-middle income countries (LMICs). I have conducted education and development research in LMICs such as Malawi, Rwanda, Ghana, Togo, Tanzania, and Cambodia. I apply qualitative and mixed methods designs, bringing rigour to my research.

I teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of practitioner enquiry, supporting teacher learning, and globalisation, society and education. I also supervise doctoral students (EdD and PhD) in my areas of expertise. My research and teaching reflects a commitment to addressing educational challenges nationally and globally.

I joined the University of Strathclyde in September 2024. Before this, I worked at the University of Aberdeen as a Research Fellow, Lecturer and Reader in Education. Prior to coming to the UK, I worked at the University of Malawi as a Lecturer, and as a secondary school Teacher.

I studied for my PhD at the University of Nottingham (2008); Master of Arts in International Education at the University of Sussex (2003); and a Bachelor of Education at the University of Malawi's Chancellor College (2000).
