Personal Statement

Pavlina van Rooyen is a 3rd-year doctoral researcher at Hunter Centre of Entrepreneurship. Her master’s degree is in Entrepreneurial leadership and management. As well as her genuine interest in strategic management research, Pavlina has previous experience as business owner with keen interest in business development and entrepreneurial mindset. Pavlina has started her research project based at HCE and One Ocean Hub, research development program at University of Strathclyde focusing on a use of scenario planning method as a participative strategy tool for monitoring and evaluation. Over the course she has adapted her research due to Covid pandemic to focus on scenario planning method process, utilising her network she has built during her internship at IOD PARC, consultancy firm with expertise in strategy development and monitoring & evaluation for development aid programs. In her current research she is attempting to uncover theoretical structure and mechanism underlying scenario planning process based on the philosophical views of critical realism and structuration theory.

Teaching Interests

My passion for teaching comes mainly from teaching entrepreneurial theory and practice. I have taught on several programmes focused on new venture creation and developing entrepreneurial skills and mindset. In my teaching I utilise both expertise from strategic planning as well as future thinking. The focus of foresight on change in the mental models and assumptions of the participants is closely related to the concept that entrepreneurial mindset could be developed through knowledge and practise.

I have contributed with my research to One Ocean Hub research development programme using scenario planning approach for environmental sensemaking. I have collaborated with external consultancy IOD Parc supporting the company in their development of future strategy using scenario planning.
