Personal Statement

Paulo Hisao Moriya got his B.Sc. (2009), M.Sc. (2012) and Ph.D. (2016) in Physics from University of São Paulo (Brazil). During his Master’s degree, he theoretically studied the effect of interatomic interactions in the superradiance phenomena (Theoretical Quantum Optics). For his Ph.D., in a dramatic change, he joined the experimental side of Physics to investigate collective and cooperative effects in light scattering from cold Strontium clouds. During this period, he learned about and worked with laser cooling and trapping in Magneto-Optical Traps (MOTs) and he got skills in techniques such as: electronics (including RF); high and ultra-high vacuum; spectroscopy; optics; light analysis; diode lasers systems; feedback systems for laser frequency, temperature and current stabilisation. He was also Post-Doctoral Fellow in the same laboratory between April and October 2016 to improve even more the experimental apparatus and move towards the generation of Bose-Einstein condensates of Strontium.

He is now Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Institute of Photonics (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK), under the UK National Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology. In this post, he is developing portable, narrow linewidth (at 689 nm) and high power (at 461 nm) lasers based in semiconductor disk lasers (SDLs) technology, also known as Vertical Extended Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers - VECSELs, for the development of compact Strontium Optical Clocks.

His research interests are the development of portable, compact, single frequency and narrow linewidth operation of lasers. It also includes laser frequency stabilisation, noise reduction techniques, the development of stable reference cavities, electronics and instrumentation.
