I am very interested in promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of members of our society through the teaching of these topics in the role of Course Director of the MSc in Safety & Risk Management.
I have also published in the field of safety research, for instance, investigating the human factors underlying slip-type accidents (chemical spillage) and the inappropriateness of a blame cluture:
M. S. Stark,* A. M. Tsokou and A. Howells Chemical spillage as a model for accident causation, Journal of Chemical Education 98, 50-56 (2020) http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.jchemed.0c00116
and investigating methods to quantify and improve the safe handling of chemicals, using an academically robust Randomised Controlled Trials approach:
A. M. Tsokou, A. Howells and M. S. Stark* Measuring & Reducing Chemical Spills by Students: a Randomised Controlled Trial of Providing Feedback, Journal of Chemical Education 96, 2180-2187 (2019) http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.jchemed.9b00262
as well as comparing interventions with improvement through practice:
M. S. Stark,* S. A. Robertson and A. M. Tsokou, Effect of Pre-lab Information on Chemical Spillage on Volume Subsequently Spilled: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Meta-analysis, and Comparison with Improvement through Repetition, ACS Chemical Health and Safety 30(5), 333-339 (2023) DOI:10.1021/acs.chas.3c00054
I have undertaken university-level research for many years, supervising 14 PhD students to successful completion (9 as lead supervisor), as well as many Masters and BSc project students.
