Personal Statement

Dr Mina Tadros is a Research Associate in Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. His research focuses on maritime decarbonisation, ship energy efficiency, marine propulsion systems, alternative fuels, and the application of optimisation and machine learning methods to support the transition towards net-zero maritime transport.

He holds a PhD in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, where his doctoral research developed optimisation procedures to minimise fuel consumption in marine diesel propulsion systems. His broader research experience spans engine modelling, ship resistance and propulsion, propeller design, exhaust-emission reduction, clean-fuel applications, shaft-generator integration, waste-heat recovery systems, fuel cells, and data-driven decision-support tools for ship design and operation.

Dr Tadros has contributed to several national and international research projects, including EcoShipYard, SEASTARS, DeWaTra, WAVES, TransShipII, Project Zero, RESHIP, SHIPLYS, and SHOPERA. His work combines numerical modelling, 1D engine simulation, CFD-informed performance assessment, MATLAB/Python-based optimisation, and artificial intelligence techniques to improve the efficiency, safety, and environmental performance of marine systems. He has also been involved in experimental and validation activities, including propeller testing and the integration of real operational data into performance models.

His publication record includes peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers in the areas of marine propulsion, ship energy efficiency, alternative fuels, propeller optimisation, emission modelling, green shipping, shipyard digitalisation, and maritime decision-support systems. He also serves as a reviewer for several international journals and conferences in marine engineering, ocean engineering, energy systems, and sustainable maritime technologies.

Alongside his research, Dr Tadros has teaching and supervision experience across naval architecture, marine engineering, ship design, ship hydrodynamics, risk analysis, engineering drawing, and maritime energy systems. His academic and professional interests centre on developing practical, data-driven and physics-informed solutions that support cleaner, more efficient and more resilient maritime transport systems.

Research Interests

My research interests focus on maritime decarbonisation, ship energy efficiency, and the development of sustainable marine propulsion systems. I am particularly interested in numerical modelling, optimisation, and machine learning applications for improving ship design and vessel operation. My work covers marine diesel and dual-fuel engines, alternative fuels, emission reduction, fuel cells, shaft-generator integration, waste-heat recovery systems, propeller design, ship resistance and propulsion, and data-driven decision-support tools for net-zero maritime systems.

I am also interested in the integration of physics-based modelling and artificial intelligence to support real-time performance prediction, energy management, and operational optimisation of ships under realistic operating and environmental conditions. My broader research interests include clean fuels, engine calibration, 1D engine simulation, CFD-informed propulsion analysis, surrogate modelling, uncertainty analysis, shipyard digitalisation, and sustainable maritime operations.
