Personal Statement

Lucia Caspani (BSc 2003, MSc 2006, PhD 2010 – University of Insubria, Como, Italy), Senior Lecturer, Institute of Photonics, Department of Physics, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK.

The Quantum Photonics (QuP) research team is dedicated to exploring the generation and application of quantum states of light in imaging, computing, and communication, leveraging our >15 years of experience in the field of quantum and nonlinear optics. Our expertise includes the parametric generation of entangled and single photons in second- and third-order nonlinear media, entanglement measurement and characterisation, quantum imaging, as well as integrated quantum photonics and multimode/multipartite entanglement. Our team is passionate about advancing the understanding of complex quantum states of light beyond traditional photon pairs and constantly seeking new ways to leverage these states for practical applications.

Complex quantum states of light: our group is focused on exploring the exciting potential of multimode/multipartite states for quantum-enhanced nonlinear imaging. Our approach involves tailoring the quantum source to optimize light-matter interactions and improve the efficiency of the nonlinear process to develop a practical and useful regime for quantum-enhanced imaging and microscopy. Additionally, we are exploring the use of multimode/multipartite entanglement to develop quantum seals.

Integrated Quantum Photonics: we are investigating the use of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to generate and manipulate quantum states of light, and harness the unique capabilities of multimode/multiphoton entanglement. In particular, we are highly interested in measurement-based (or one-way) quantum computation and multiplexed quantum information on photonic chips. Not only can PICs allow more compact photonics setups, but they can unveil new functionalities allowing the development of exciting new opportunities in quantum photonics.
