In-situ Monitoring of Flowing Pharmaceutical Powders

The project aims to develop an in-situ real-time monitoring solution for flow rates of granular materials using terahertz spectroscopy. This is of interest due to the need of feeding such pharmaceutical materials to other process down a continuous manufacturing line. The monitoring of these materials is of great importance due to variations in physical properties such as density causing inconsistency in the final product. The creation of high potency, low dosage drugs has been difficult in continuous manufacturing processes due to the variation of dosage in the final product. By using terahertz techniques, the measurement of various properties is possible which allows for greater control over the manufacturing process and in so doing increase the quality and uniformity of the final product and thus aids in the advancement of continuous manufacturing processes.
