I graduated from the University of Paisley in 1998 and completed twenty years of work in the Automotive Industry, specialising in Body-in-White Manufacturing Engineering.
I have experience in optimising production processes and introducing new models into existing facilities as well as developing assembly lines from basic visio concepts and process blueprints through all the stages of process development to installation and commissioning. The most recent ten years of my career focused on manufacturing robotic process simulation of BIW assembly processes, again on both upgrading existing lines and developing new assembly lines for new vehicle platforms as well as ergonomic assessments. The advantage of working in process simulation is the variety and scope of the many different manufacturing systems encountered in a comparatively shorter time-frame.
Now based at NMIS as a research assistant, I am applying my industrial process knowledge to supporting the INDU-ZERO INTERREG NSR Project for developing a smart manufacturing blueprint to enable the industrialisation of the domestic energy saving external cladding renovation kits for housing associations and councils in the NSR area. Our role in this project is to help improve the processability of the current low volume systems and bring down the cost per kit whilst drastically improving production rates by researching smart manufacturing systems including CNC robotics, automated assembly processes, BIM data management, build improvements to increase throughput and material flow. The blueprint will be capable of supplying 15,000 house kits per year. If the INTERREG Project is to fulfil the forecast 22 million homes to be upgraded by 2050 we expect that at least 45 separate factories working simultaneously across the NSR will be needed to supply the demand.
Expertise & Capabilities
The INDU-ZERO research work into off-site manufacturing construction in factories, highlights the advantages with off-site work and I am keen to expand upon this and I welcome opportunities to investigate other opportunities for industrialising and automating pre-fabricated construction systems for commerical, industrial and domestic projects.
