Personal Statement

Qualifications: Graduated with a B.Sc. Honours in Physiology and Biochemistry from the University of Southampton and then a Ph.D. in Neurophysiology with Professor Gerald Kerkut in the same department.

 

Postdoctoral work was then carried out at the Dept. of Physics, University of California, San Diego with Professor Mauricio Montal (patch clamping of reconstituted nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in planar lipid bilayers); the Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory of Professor Stephen Heinemann at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California as a Muscular Dystrophy Association Postdoctoral Fellow (first expression, functional and pharmacological characterisation of the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene family) and in the Department of Pharmacology, University College London with Professor David Colquhoun (patch clamping nicotinic receptors in brain slice preparations) before taking up a lectureship at the University of Strathclyde.

 

Current research interests include the characterisation of antibodies which may be useful for the development of diagnostic tests for CJD, the amino acid determinants of the kinetics of antagonist interactions with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, the interaction of alcohol with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and the characterisation of novel pharmacological activities of plant extracts.

 

Member of the Physiology Society, Pharmacology Society, Biochemical Society and Society for Neuroscience (USA)

 

Teaching responsibilities in all years for Bioscience and MPharm programs, including course coordination of three classes. Academic Selector for the MPharm program from 2002 till early 2013.  Member of the Higher Education Academy.
