Personal Statement
Dr Ren was with the Centre for Signal and Image Processing (CeSIP), Dept. of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde. Before joined Strathclyde in Dec. 2010, he took several research positions in School of Informatics, the University of Bradford, Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), University of Surrey, Digital Imaging Research Centre (DIRC), Kingston University and ICCAVE, University of Abertay.
From Jan. 2021, he has joined the National Subsea Centre, Robert Gordon University as a Professor of Computing Sciences, working on hyperspectral imaging and multimodal image fusion based AI big data analytics with applications in oil/gas sectors as well as nondestructive inspection, condition monitoring, smart manufacturing and remote sensing. His email address is j.ren@rgu.ac.uk.
His research interests include: visual computing; computer vision; content-based image/video analysis and understanding; machine learning, human-computer interaction; visual surveillance; archive restoration; motion estimation; large scale data analysis and visualization e.g. hyperspectral imagery and medical data, intelligent multimedia information processing.
Recently he focused mainly on hyperspectral imaging and multimodality image fusion based AI machine learning driven big data analytics and its applications in condition monitoring, asset management, non-destructive inspection and smart manufacturing. His work has been supported by EU H2020, NERC, Innovate UK (TSB), EPSRC, RSE, NSFC (China) and industrial partners such as NNL, Canon, Franuhofer, Beatsons, Johnson and Johnson, GSK, Quality Meat Scotland, Institute of Brewing and Distilling et al.
Dr. Ren has published over 250 peer-reviewed research papers in prestigious international journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Trans. Image Processing, IEEE Trans. Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Trans. Circuits & Systems for Video Technology, IEEE Trans. Multimedia, IEEE Trans. System Man and Cybernetics, IEEE Trans. Broadcasting, ISPRS J. Photometry and Remote Sensing, Information Fusion, Pattern Recognition, Computer Vision and Image Understanding, etc.
He acts as an Associate Editor of six international journals, including IEEE JSTARS and J. of Franklin Institute, and also guest editor for several other journals. He is also a reviewer for a number of premier journals in this field, including IEEE Transactions T-PAMI, T-IP, T-CSVT, T-MM, T-SMC and other journals like Computer Vision and Image Understanding, and Pattern Recognition et al. He also involves as co-organizer or program committee of a number of international conferences and workshops.
