Personal Statement

Gary Howorth is a leading expert in the energy industry with ~40 years of experience in the quantification of strategic issues, investment appraisal, and operations, in the power, oil & gas industry. He has specialized for many years in the quantification and understanding of market issues and dynamics, notably in industries related to natural gas/LNG and electricity. His broad experience spans the globe and includes all aspects of the energy business, including risk management, exploration and drilling, refining operations, and the introduction of new energy technology. As an energy economist and a chartered electrical engineer, Mr. Howorth has a unique skill set covering both technical and economic issues. He knows how the energy sectors work from the process and technical efficiency perspective, as well as from the market perspective. This has enabled him to develop and create innovative forecasts and participate in discussions in many markets especially ones that are less liquid such as in emerging markets or are thinly traded ones.

In 2009 Mr. Howorth founded Energy Redefined to focus on energy initiatives such as clean energy (including renewables), carbon emissions, efficiency projects, and flaring reduction. Gary also worked part-time for the World Bank on clean development mechanisms (CDM), carbon issues and financing, market forecasting, flaring reduction initiatives, small scale gas processing, gas compressor/pipeline implementations and distributed power projects. Prior to joining Energy-Redefined, Gary held a number of technical, commercial and strategic roles at BP Exploration (1982 – 1992), Arthur Andersen (1992-2000), PA Consulting (2000-2003). More recently, he spent six years at PFC Energy where he headed the global gas and power group and the valuations and research and development (R&D) group.

Gary has a PhD from the Electronic and Electrical Engineering department at the University of Strathclyde and is interested in the use of Agent Based Models and Multi Agent Systems for simulation of power systems. Over the last 3-4 years he has been working on the development of Virtual Power Plant processes.  including; software development, business models, decision making under unceratinty, risk managment, price prediction  and power flow modelling.
