Personal Statement
Elmar Haller is a Senior Lecturer at the Experimental Quantum Optics and Photonics Group of the Department of physics. He is interested in fundamental research in the fields of atomic and molecular physics, ultracold atoms, and quantum simulation. His current research focuses on the study of bosonic and fermionic quantum gases, with an emphasis on transport phenomena and the interplay of interactions and confinement.
Elmar joined the Physics Department of the University of Strathclyde in 2012 as a Postdoc and Marie Curie Fellow in the group of Prof. S. Kuhr to build a quantum-gas microscope with images of single, site-resolved, fermionic atoms. In 2015, he received a Chancellor’s Fellowship of the University of Strathclyde and started an experimental setup to study Cesium atoms in optical lattices.
Prior to his work at Strathclyde, Elmar studied Physics at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, examining for his diploma thesis microtraps on atom-chips in the group of Prof. J. Schmiedmayer. During his doctoral work, he studied quantum phases in low-dimensional systems in the group of Prof. H.-C. Nägerl at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. His PhD thesis was rewarded with the DAMOP Dissertation Award of the American Physical Society in 2011.
