Personal profile

Personal Statement

I am a Professor of Finance and the Founding Director of the Responsible Business Institute (ReBI) at the University of Strathclyde. I was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Geneva and a visiting lecturer at Bayes (formerly known as Cass) Business School, ESCP Europe, and SKEMA Business School.

My experience spans various roles in consulting, knowledge exchange, and R&D. I have served as academic advisor for the Scottish Government's Investor Panel with the remit to advise on how Scotland can attract global capital investment in the infrastructure required to transition to net zero. In addition, I have advised a large asset manager on equity investments and ESG. I was also a member of the Research Panel of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) which represents more than 21,000 Chartered Accountants as members worldwide. Also, I have attracted senior industry executives and leading academics in joining ReBI’s advisory board to assist in bringing together industry, policy making, and a academia. Moreover, I serve as Academic Fellow at the Centre for Responsible Banking & Finance (CRBF) of the University of St. Andrews.

I have raised more than £1.3m in research, knowledge exchange, external engagements, external funding, and PhD scholarships. My research interests include Corporate Finance, Sustainable Finance & ESG, and Corporate Governance. I am ranked in the top-30,000 authors out of more than 2million authors from 65 disciplines and in the top-1,500 Accounting Research Authors in SSRN. My research has been published in leading peer reviewed journals.

I serve as Associate Editor for “The European Journal of Finance” and I have served as Associate (Guest) Editor for the “International Review of Financial Analysis” and the “Journal of Operational Research Society”.

In addition, I am the founding director of the MSc Sustainable Finance following my service as director of the MSc Investment and Finance, which during my tenure became one the largest MSc Programmes of Strathclyde Business School, with graduates placed with leading employers (e.g. Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, BlackRock, PwC etc.). I am also passionate about teaching and learning and this is reflected in my receiving the Students' Association Award for Teaching Excellence in 2015 and 2017, and being nominated for the Students' Association Award for Teaching Excellence in 2019, 2021, and 2023. This is also reflected in past student testimonials such as:
