Personal profile

Personal Statement

After graduating with an Honours Degree in Hispanic Studies from the University of Glasgow, I went on to complete a PGCE, specialising in early years education from the University of Worcester.

Returning to Scotland in the early 90s, I worked in primary education for over 30 years, specialising in the teaching of literacy and languages. Leading on languages at school level, I developed projects which took languages beyond school and into the wider community; creating links with local businesses and schools abroad.

As an active member of South Lanarkshire Council’s 1+2 Strategy Group and Primary Language Learning (PLL) team, I was involved in developing a sustainable model to implement the 1+2 languages policy across schools in the local authority.

In 2015 I joined the university as a Professional Development Officer at SCILT, (Scotland’s National Centre for Languages); a role which was as wide as it was varied. This included the research, design, and delivery of a  range of professional learning opportunities for teachers at all stages of their careers. Other key elements of my role involved collaboration with Education Scotland colleagues on the national 1+2 Language Leadership Programme (1+2 LLP) and creation and delivery of the pedagogy element of ‘Teachers Learning to Teach Languages' (TELT), a blended professional learning programme in partnership with the Open University.

At SCILT, I also led on creating opportunities to engage parents, families and the wider community in language learning, liaising with diverse  organisations representing parents and carers in order to promote the benefits of intergenerational language learning for Scotland’s young people.

Joining the School of Education as a Teaching Fellow in 2019, I teach on a range of modules across undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

Research Interests

Currently a Doctoral student on the EdD programme, my research aims to explore the experiences of early career primary teachers in family engagement practices in order to identify areas for future consideration to support future cohorts of early career teachers.

Research interests include literacy and children's literature, modern language learning and teaching and the spectrum of parental engagement practices.
