Personal profile

Personal Statement

I am a Professor in Applied Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. I re-joined the University of Strathclyde in 2011 and in 2016 I was awarded a prestigious Chancellor’s Fellow award. I became a Senior Lecturer in 2018, a Reader in 2021, and a Professor in 2024. My current activities focus on applied Artificial Intelligence and industrial informatics, with particular emphasis on:

  1. Computer Vision for Image and Video
  2. Multimodal Learning
  3. Domain adaptation
  4. Causality and explainability

My research interests are interdisciplinary, spanning across various application domains and industrial sectors, including:

  • Sustainable Agri-food Systems (Livestock and Arable)
  • Digital Health
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Cybersecurity

I am the Theme Lead for the Measurement, Digital and Enabling Technologies (MDET) Strategic Theme, Co-Director of the Laboratory for Innovation in Autism, Strathclyde lead for the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Understandable agri-food Systems Transformed by Artificial INtelligence (SUSTAIN), and a member of the HeatlhTech Cluster management team. Additionally, I serve on the Innovation Advisory Board in The Data Lab Innovation Centre, advising on innovation and collaborative projects. I am also a member of the Specialist Advisory Group on applications of Artificial Intelligence for Environment, Natural Resources & Agriculture Policy advising Scottish Government on the use, future opportunities, risks and regulatory aspects of AI. I am a strong advocate for interdisciplinary research and I am involved in multiple projects funded by UKRI, InnovateUK and H2020.
