Personal profile
Personal Statement
I am Professor of Architecture and Director of Knowledge Exchange and Post Graduate Research at the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Strathclyde. I hold an MSc in Revitalisation of Architectural and Urban Heritage and a PhD in History of Architecture. I have taught the history of architecture, evaluation and reuse of architectural and urban heritage, sustainable building design and urban planning, and integration of low carbon infrastructure systems at the universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, United Kingdom, and as Visiting Professor at universities in Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia.
I am a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal on Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainable Development, International Journal of Architectural Research, Sustainability of Culture and Heritage (a section of Sustainability), Urban and Regional Planning, and Arhitektura i Urbanizam, and a referee for 20 other international journals. I have been a referee for research applications submitted to EUREKA: Eurostars; Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation; Sweedish Research Council Formas, Swiss National Science Foundation; Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation; Ministry of Sciences, Serbia; Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI), Cardiff City Council, UK; and assessed the applications submitted to Innovate UK. I have also assessed research outputs submitted to the Italian Evaluation of Research Quality Exercise. As a member of the Panel for Creative Arts and Design of the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities, I participated in the assessment of PhD applications.
I have established strong links with the construction sector in particular and across engineering professions through a series of multi-institutional knowledge exchange projects since 2000: Network of Construction Creativity Clubs, Centre for the Built Environment, Scottish Construction Centre, CIC Start Online and Mainstreaming Innovation, funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Scottish Government. They attracted over 6,000 delegates at live events and over 3,600 members of online projects. My other key professional engagements include membership in the Scottish Construction Forum (2009-2012), the Boards of Scottish Sustainable Development Forum (2010-2013) and Architecture+Design Scotland (2010-2014), and the 2020 Climate Group (2012-2014).
I have developed the proposal for and led the establishment of the Flexible Learning Centre (FLC) at the Faculty of Engineering which was launched in November 2016 (later renamed as Engineering Online Centre). I have led the production of the online CPD courses published by the FLC on ‘Social Benefits of Innovative Lighting’ and 'Decision-making for Place Making'. I am active in the cross-University research networks 'Socially Progressive Innovation and Entrepreneurship' and 'Strathclyde Ageing Network'.
I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Fellow of Higher Education Academy, peer reviewer for Arts and Humanities Research Council, and a member of the Panel for Creative Design and Arts of Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities. I was a PI and director of the knowledge exchange project CIC Start Online, 2009-2013 when it was included in The Scottish Green List 2010 as one of the 20 top projects and initiatives for sustainable development.

Teaching
My teaching career in Higher Education started with the teaching of the history of architecture and reuse of architectural and urban heritage at the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (1981-1992).
Following the completion of EPSRC funded research project on the sustainability of buildings at the University of Strathclyde in 2000, I developed and delivered two modules on sustainable urban planning and sustainable construction for MSc Matching Section Programme at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Strathclyde, in 2002.
In 2006, I developed two Modules for the Lean Construction Management online course for the Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde:
- Design and Construction Management: Mobilisation and Project Planning, Health and Safety Management, Financial Monitoring, Maintenance, Construction Options
- Post-Project Evaluation: Closing Out a Project, Health and Safety Files, Retentions and Defects Liability, Knowledge Management, Post-Project Evaluation and Post-Occupancy Feedback.
From 2002 to date I have delivered various lectures on sustainable development and built environment at postgraduate courses at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
As a Visiting Professor at the Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy, I delivered a series of lectures on sustainable urban development and building design in 2005-2013.
As a Visiting Professor at the University of Basilicata, Matera, Italy, I have delivered lectures on the sustainability of built heritage at undergraduate courses and on the application of smart technologies in managing built heritage for postgraduate students in the period 2011 to date.
