Personal profile
Personal Statement
Arushi is an ESRC doctoral researcher at the School of Education, University of Strathclyde. Her research focuses on understanding the process of raising critical consciousness of caste oppression with children in India. She is exploring participatory, creative, art and play-based methods to research with children, primary school teachers and advisors from Dalit communities. Arushi’s research is centred around ideas of children as agents of change, anti-caste love, resistance, solidarity, hope and the power of education in bringing transformative change. Previously, Arushi completed a Master’s in History from the University of Delhi, taking courses in Dalit histories, popular culture, anti-caste movements, social identities, and the intersectionality of caste, class, and gender in modern India. Further inquiry into the reproduction of structures of inequalities made her question the implied pastness and pedagogical silences on contemporary issues of caste in school education in India. This made her interested in researching how primary school-based educational programmes can educate children to challenge caste discrimination by acting for social justice and social change. Recently, Arushi completed a Master's in Applied Educational and Social Research at the University of Strathclyde. Her master's research focused on the barriers and facilitators for primary school teachers in raising critical awareness of caste oppression among children in India, where she got experience in sensitively approaching issues of caste oppression by conducting in-depth semi-structured interviews with people working across a range of primary educational contexts (including teacher educators, NGO workers, individuals from Dalit communities and researchers working on primary school education).
