A friendly PhD student with a physics background, looking to contribute to the renewables industry.
I studied for MPhys in Physics with Advanced Research, and obtained it with 1st class Honours. The advanced research specialisation allowed a 100-credit research project (2.5x larger than the standard masters' project), where I researched 'radiation reaction-reduced Cherenkov radiation in a quantum vacuum' and was able to produce some original results for my supervisor. (Ah, good times!)
As the degree finished however, I realised I really wanted something more directly useful and helpful (sorry Physicists!) to people; considering my skillset, I was led to renewable energy.
I'm currently studying for a PhD with the Wind and Marine Energy Systems and Structures (WAMESS) CDT at Strathclyde. After a year learning the basics of many areas of offshore renewables (from weather resource to electrical systems to economic policy), I was offered a PhD under Peter Jamieson and J Michael R Graham on the aerodynamics of a novel vertical axis multi-rotor system (VAWT MRS). The MRS layout turns many typical VAWT disadvantages into advantages, and can obtain the usual benefits of multi-rotor systems such as easier standardisation, intrinsic redundancy, etc, so it seemed a really exciting opportunity!
I've started fairly recently, but I hope to study effects of flow concentration, tip-losses and counter-rotation of adjacent VAWTs, at various degrees of fidelity and at least two models (full CFD and actuator disk). Aerodynamics is new to me so there's quite a learning curve, but I'm optimistic my background has given me the skills to pick it up well.
Personally, I am committed and driven with my work, and friendly and cooperative with people. I'm 'carbon-neutral' (an oversimplification of course) thanks to 8billiontrees.com, and (begrudgingly!) reducing my carbon footprint through my diet too.
