Personal Statement
Alice Turner began her career at the University of Strathclyde with a bachelor's degree in Pharmacology. After undertaking a placement at Drug Delivery International Ltd., she developed a great passion for formulation which she pursued in her master's degree in Drug Delivery Systems under Dr. Iain Oswald. This developed her knowledge of the solid state chemistry of drugs and built on her existing love of formulation.
Alice joined The EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre for Continuous Manufacturing and Crystallisation under Prof. Gavin Halbert in October 2014 and began a PhD project in New Methods for the Production of Oral Dosage Forms. Her project aimed to generate an oral formulation capable of effectively solubilising a class II drug. Poor solubility, and the resultant poor bioavailability, is a growing problem in the pharmaceutical industry. Although a number of methods to combat this issue already exist on the market, there is a growing need for formulations which can be more easily tailored to the needs of the patient and be produced in a less damaging manner. To achieve this, the conventional methods of tablet manufacture such as granulation, drying and compression were replaced by the innovative formulation technique of inkjet printing. It was hoped this would generate a flexible dosage form with greater control over drug content and distribution, while allowing exploration of the drug/polymer interactions down to the micrometre scale.
Alice joined the CMAC National Facility team in January 2019 as maternity cover and transitioned into a process technician role in May of that year. She primarily worked on formulation and analysis projects, as well as providing analytical support to crystallisation projects, for a range of academic and industrial clients. She then joined Cambrex, Edinburgh in February 2022, as a solid-state screening project scientist working on a range of polymorph and salt screening projects.
Alice returned to the university as a science writer as part of the CMAC Future Manufacturing Research Hub in February 2024. In her current role, she co-ordinates and acts as lead author of multi-author, multi-university journal papers. She also supports and liaises with researchers to complete Hub papers and dissemination activities. Her research interests include innovative formulation, process development and physical analysis.
